CHARACTER NAME: Auraya Dyer
SERIES: Age of the Five trilogy
CANON POINT: before the epilogue in Voice of the Gods
AGE: physically 26, actually 28
APPEARANCE:
Auraya is described as being a tall girl with sharp features. She's thin on an average day, but at the point she'll be coming into the book she will be unhealthily thin and malnourished, making her seem even sharper than normal. She has long, brown hair that she usually wears straight or pulled back in some sort of fashion to keep it from being a mess. Her pb is Nina Dobrev.
PERSONALITY:
As a White, Auraya was known for her compassion for all people. Her compassion for everyone made her able to see both sides of an argument and made her an excellent negotiator. Her ability to empathize with either side always led her to find a solution that would satisfy the two sides in an argument. This was what had made her attractive to the Priesthood and the gods before and why she was more than happy to serve as a White.
As a White, Auraya was trained to be a regal person. She was one of five leaders of the Circlian religion, and ruled over the country of Hania as well. She was taught to be a diplomat, which made her polite and cautious in her words. Speaking so that she never said the wrong thing and trapped the White in things they could not promise. She didn't need to be taught compassion, only emphasized it more as a White. As the youngest White, she was also the most curious White. She was interested in the world around her and wanted to see everything. She cared for all people and was easy to get along with. She was always easy to smile and easy to talk with. Auraya grew into her role as a leader and was someone people would follow and love easily.
All Auraya has ever wanted to do is care for people. She feels strongly for the people around her and because she can see all sides of a story often finds herself empathizing with people whom others think she shouldn't in the first place. It's why she always felt compassion to the Dreamweavers, despite their heathen status and confliction that she believed their souls were unsaved and the concern that brought about. Her compassion for the Dreamweavers was rare in Circlian religion and led to many conflicts as she worked to try to rectify her personal confliction by allowing Dreamweavers to teach Priests their healing knowledge so that less people would be tempted to give up their souls to be Dreamweavers for their abilities and would join the Circlians and still maintain the knowledge and their souls ensured safety after death. However, her passion for the Siyee of Si led her to bring them into the Circlian fold under alliance to better protect them. She always does as much as she can.
Her ability to empathize has led her to other conflicts as well.
Auraya trusted in the gods wholly. She believed they were just and fair and held the peoples' desires in their hearts. Even when she fell in love with a Dreamweaver, Leiard, she was conflicted over what the gods would think about her being with a 'heathen'. In the end, her love had won out and the gods had essentially given their approval but left the real decision in the hands of her other White. Auraya didn't see why Dreamweavers were less than Circlians, though, and she felt she should love whomever she wanted to. The confliction was there, but only just barely. It ended up being settled for her when the oldest White, Juran, sent Leiard away from Auraya. Auraya had gone to search for Leiard and try to settle the problem, but discovered him with a whore and having already moved on from Auraya. She was hurt, and left the memory of her love with Leiard behind.
Then the war came and Auraya was forced to fight. She believes so wholly in the peace and compromise and solutions that fighting never quite settled with her. And when she killed the leader of the Pentadrians in a fit of anger, she was immediately brought out of that anger by her shock and disbelief at what she had done. Killing a man, many men in the war, bothered Auraya to the very depths of her heart. Even though the Pentadrians started the war and came at her people with malice, she never wanted to harm another. She had nightmares that plagued her and grew worse with every night. She didn't have a confliction over her role versus her faith because the Pentadrians deserved it for causing it, but it never settled well with her.
Auraya's faith had been whole. Not to the point of fanaticism but enough to where she found it hard to disbelieve in the gods decisions. It helped when Chaia became a personal friend of hers. He visited her often and privately in her mind and dreams. And soon the pair began an intimate relationship as well. Auraya always felt strange over her relationship with Chaia, believing it was like a pet trying to love their owner. She couldn't quite comprehend how it worked. She did love Chaia, but more as a god and a friend and not as a lover. Chaia accepted this, but loved Auraya so wholly that he still never left her. She was grateful for this connection and was happy to keep a friend.
It was Huan who tested Auraya most. Huan revealed to Auraya that the man she had loved as Leiard was in fact the leader of Dreamweavers Mirar and ordered her to kill him while she had the chance in Si while the pair saved Siyee from a particularly strong disease. While angered at having been lied to and deceived by Mirar Auraya had agreed to kill him, mostly out of initial shock and anger. But Mirar opened his mind and showed her the truth, that he hadn't deceived her to get close to the White and cause harm to anyone. Auraya then realized that the man was innocent and Huan still commanded her to kill him. Auraya couldn't do it, though. She couldn't kill an innocent man just because the gods hated him. He didn't deserve it. And if she didn't stand for what was right, what did Auraya stand for? She outright refused to do something that she didn't believe was just and the gods decided to punish her for it. Her punishment was to leave the Siyee to die from disease she had been helping fight and stay locked away for a time. Auraya could not abide their decision and gave up her position as a White. However, she did still believe that they were gods (even if she lost faith in their leadership) and remained a Priestess. She lived in Si from then on, still caring for Siyee since Mirar had fled at her urging to escape the wrath of the gods. Auraya tried to remain well behaved and not push the gods to punish her further, but when the gods tested her again by starting the war a second time through the Circlians and making the Siyee the first attack Auraya found herself doubting even more.
Doubt plagued Auraya and made her question a lot about the gods she had once believed so wholly in. They played with lives and were far more spiteful for personal reasons. The Siyee's capture by the Pentadrians led to Auraya's own capture and eventual imprisonment and tested Auraya further than she had ever believed before.
Imprisonment was hard on Auraya. She was subjected to humiliation and degradation during her time and left alone for hours on end in a void beneath the Pentadrians' Sanctuary. She had no bathroom and was chained to a throne inside of a void. She was never comfortable and never unchained to walk around or move. She was left to her own devices in the darkness and nearly went mad under those conditions alone. The new leader that had replaced the one she had killed, Nekaun, had been the one to imprison her and took joy in her misery. He visited her daily and taunted her while he watched her suffer in humiliation. And one day he pushed her boundaries too far. All this time Auraya had tried to maintain the quite dignity she had mastered as a White, but when Nekaun attempted to force himself on Auraya her mind was frantic and panicked and wild. She was only saved by the Pentadrian god, Sheyr, who tipped Auraya off was really her own god, Chaia, in disguise.
The only things that kept Auraya from losing it entirely were her nightly conversations with Mirar. Mirar had been in Glymma when she'd been imprisoned, and she understood why he couldn't actively save her. But he dream linked with her every night. During the day, Auraya spent her time mind skimming to distract herself, but with Mirar she held real conversations and learned of things from his end. It was also through him that she learned the gods had been Immortals, just like herself and the others, and had become gods and killed the others to rule. He also revealed that gods did not take souls.
Auraya found this hard to cope with. Hard to believe. While she hated the goddess Huan, who had punished her and sentenced Mirar to death simply without just cause, she believed in Chaia and trusted him. She didn't believe he would lie to her. Until the god himself came to her once more in prison and told her how to become a god and that that would save her from her imprisonment. Auraya realized that if she became a being of magic, she would disappear in the void and that Chaia would have known this. She realized that Chaia had tried to kill her.
That had been the last thing Auraya's fragile psyche could take. From then she hated the gods with all her being and wanted them dead. When freed she fought with Huan and endured torture at her hands and tried to kill her alone, but realized to stop a god from fleeing you had to corner them from all sides and above and below. She joined the other five immortals to do this and exact her revenge on the gods that betrayed her. As she watched the battlefield where the Pentadrians and Circlians were meeting on an isthmus, she saw god figures going back and forth between the two groups. That was when she realized that the Pentadrian gods and the Circlian gods were the one in the same and that they had been pushing the two religions to war for their own amusement.
Auraya trapped the gods in a void with the other Immortals by depleting all magic around them so they could not escape without disappearing into nothingness. They stayed in the center where the last bit of magic was and Chaia spoke to Auraya. He confessed that they did not take souls and explained how it was Huan who had tried to trick her into killing herself. Auraya felt pain over having doubted Chaia, who had only ever cared for her, and watched as he killed himself and the other gods by sucking up the last magic so that the void took them and killed them.
As it stands, Auraya is left with a confliction so deep. Her belief in the gods was false entirely, but her love for Chaia still lasted. Her faith was also left empty with nothing to fill the void. Auraya still struggles over this confliction. It leaves her pained and in a mental place she won't be able to heal from for awhile. As well as the betrayal of Huan and Nekaun's abuse, Auraya finds herself distrustful of people she had once loved. The only people she finds solace in are the Immortals who are like her and the Siyee who were only ever peaceful and good to her and removed from humanity. Auraya retreated into Si to be left alone with her thoughts and the last people she trusted.
Auraya has changed deeply as a person. She still retains some poise and grace that was natural to begin with and bred deeper into her being as one of the White, but there's an edge to her now she can't smooth out. Hysteria and madness still touches her from her time imprisoned in dark places, and with her own questioning faith in gods and humanity it comes out in dark and cynical humor. She laughs at inappropriate times and comments on things most people don't talk about. There's sweetness still in her, and she tries to cling to that, but distrust colors her judgment. She cares for people, but she's wary to grow close to them. She prefers to remain distanced emotionally. She still speaks eloquently, sweetly, and politely, though. She's full of conflictions and will be until her own mind is healed and settled, which could take years if not centuries.
ABILITIES:
MAGIC ⇢ Auraya is one of six powerful sorcerers in the world, and suspected to possibly be the most powerful sorcerer currently alive. Like all magic users, Auraya draws on the natural magic within the world to supply her with power. However, magic is not never-ending, and using too much of it too quickly can deplete magic in one location. Often in battles, Gifted (people who use magic but aren't sorcerers) will move from spot to spot so as to be able to draw on magic throughout a battle. Once depleted, it takes time for magic to seep in and fill an area again. Voids are areas where magic has been depleted to the point of almost not existing at all in order to kill a god. Magic may take centuries to fill the void, if it ever does, and voids are particularly dangerous as even the smallest Gift can't be used inside of one. Like all Gifts, hers take practice and application. If someone doesn't use a Gift for a long time, they can forget how to do it at all. Some Gifts Auraya uses near constantly, some she doesn't have much need for.
Auraya, herself, has always had an affinity with magic. She learned Gifts (skills magic users can call on) rather quickly when taught them. She has a number of Gifts in her own right, as well, that set her apart from common people.HEALING: Auraya knows basic healing Gifts that most priests know (how to heal wounds, how to make a birth go more pleasantly, how to help ease a troubled mind). Priests were never as good at healing as Dreamweavers, so her knowledge is limited by what she knows from them. However, she does now know Mirar's healing Gift. He taught her how to heal at a cellular level and how to remove bad cells, replace them with better ones, or isolate foreign contaminants (like sickness). Because he taught her healing on a cellular level, she was able to figure out that she could use this Gift to repair her own cells and stop the aging process. Thus, she obtained immortality and became an Immortal. This has not strengthened her body in any way and she is still susceptible to normal human injuries if she's struck.
TELE/EMPATHETIC: Auraya is able to read the minds of people around her so long as they're not shielded. She believed this was a Gift the gods had given her, but when Emerahl taught her how to mind skim she realized she could reteach herself to use the telepathy the gods had given her and regained that particular Gift through practice again. She doesn't use it so often anymore, though. Mostly with people she doesn't trust. She also has the ability to 'mind skim', when she enters a trance and can reach out to see into the minds of people around her and take in more that way. Mirar has taught her how to dream link as well, and slip into a dream-like state that allows her to call out to people in their dreams and communicate with them there if necessary. It does require the permission of the person she's calling to, though, and if they don't answer or reject her she cannot establish a dream link. She is able to sense the emotions of people around her when necessary, but often time she prefers to use her telepathy to just see their minds rather than graze their emotions if she does it at all. She has built and fortified her own defenses to keep people out of her mind without her permission.
PHYSICAL: Magic can be used in a number of ways, like with creating light or generating small amounts of heat. The most prominent way Auraya uses a more physical magic is to create a barrier around herself in fights. She can make a small shield or extend her shield out to cover others. She is also able to use her powers to create a sort of 'push' effect. With this, she can move items. But it can also be utilized in battle and create and even stronger effect that can strike at and mortally injure a person.
FLIGHT: Auraya has the ability to fly. It's not through the use of push and pull effect with magic, but rather she can sense herself in reference to the world and simply changes that position. This allows herself to carry herself and propel herself forward. Flight is the closest and most accurate description of this act. It's also her personal Gift. She loves to use this gift and loves to fly, and keeps her hair pulled back often to keep it from tangling so much. Her flight can be sped to move more quickly if necessary as well. Because of the way she moves herself, this technique can also be used out of air. Such as with water, she can use this technique to move herself instead of swimming herself.
POSSESSIONS:
- Clothes on her back (which is only just a deep blue sheet wrapped carefully around herself)
- Veez named Mischief+ Veez are primate-like creatures that look like foxes. Their paws are more like small hands that can grip onto things and allow them to climb on walls and ceilings. Veez also have the ability to talk, but they only communicate wants and needs and in very limited speech with limited sounds. Mischief often calls Auraya 'Owaya' and treats 'tweets'. Veez have some small telepathy and telekinesis. Like with humans, these gifts have to be honed. Mischief has only honed his ability to telekinetically pick locks. Mischief has also honed the ability of batting his eyelashes at people until they give him what he wants, particularly girls.
